Insight of Visiting Malaysia's Aviation Meteorological Center

1. Finding Direction: AMC

The National Aviation Meteorological Center is actually not located inside the airport buildings but a separated building in front of taxiway Bravo and east of the KLIA Main Terminal Building (MTB). The car parking lots provided there are not available for non workers of the building as the entrance is guarded as well since it's a restricted area.

Even though I visited AMC with permission, I'm not permitted to park there, so I parked at Long Term Car Parking (LTCP), took the free shuttle bus to KLIA MTB and walked another 10 minutes to the building.

Above image is the collage of my journey travelling to the meteorological center (Parking at LTCP that the ATC tower could be seen, the shuttle bus, walking at KLIA to the meteorological center).

2. Inside The Center

The center is located at the second floor of the building, the view of image above would be the first thing comes to your sight once you exited the lift.

The picture above shows the view of an aviation meteorological officer at work, having the view of the Satellite Terminal Building (STB) on a regular basis.

The massive monitor is a touch screen device that shows the up-to-date weather data continuously for all the officers in the aviation meteorological center to share the same mental picture.

3. QNA

Q : Requirements to work here?

A : To become an officer of the aviation meteorological center, you have to hold a degree in physic/mathematic.

A: Yes, the aviation meteorological center here is in charge of the civilian airports, those meteorological officers who work at those air force bases are worker of Malaysia Meteorology Department (MMD).

Q: Why is weather forecast so inaccurate? A: Since Malaysia is having tropical climate, the thermal activity (heat energy) in atmosphere is very hard to predict because the weather is unstable compared to those cold atmosphere country (more stable).

Q: What are the difference of weather reporting range?

A: AIRMET is provided for those flights that will be flying below FL100 while SIGMET contains the weather up to FL500 for those flights penetrating our airspace.
